Sexual Orientation (England & Wales)

return to sex data gap

Census 2021: For the first time the census asked about sexual orientation, with the new style census filled out pindividually and privately online for the first time.

Disappointingly, in the 6 Jan 2023 release the ONS merged lesbian and gay so that we couldn't tell that 0.6% of the population of England & Wales identified themselves as lesbian, whereas 0.95%   identified themselves as gay men. However, that's what lesbians of the blinking British Empire are for and all was revealed in an ONS FOI Response.

By 25 Jan 2023, the ONS had a page for "Sexual orientation by sex and by age"
